A postpartum doula is an excellent source of support for all members of the family adapting to life with a new baby. As a postpartum doula, I offer assistance in the following ways:
- Baby care: The help of a postpartum doula will allow you to take good care of yourself so that you can take the best care of your baby. My presence will allow you to nap, get a good meal, take a nap, or do anything you feel you need to do.
- Household chores: If a good meal is what you need, I can help. If the laundry is piling up, I can relieve you of that duty. I can help you maintain the home environment.
- Sibling support: The adjustment to a new baby for other children can be difficult. Some children’s books can be helpful in understanding the child’s new place in the family, or perhaps they just need some one-on-one time with you or another adult.
- Access to information and resources: Wondering where baby should sleep? We can discuss the benefits and risks of all of your options. Having trouble calming baby or reading his/her signs? We can discuss different techniques and common baby signs of hunger, over stimulation, etc. I can refer you to books or individuals that can address any issues that fall out of the scope of a postpartum doula.
